Sewing Teacher (Paid role)

Primary purpose of position:

This role is to teach a diverse group of participants with beginner to intermediate sewing skills – upskilling to learn commercial standard sewing, teaching them to make patterns, create designs using new and recycled fabrics, understand the clothing production process – meeting the requirements of the training curriculum and Camilla textile production.

12 months with availability to start the 1st week of October 2024  (With a possibility to extend) 

3 months 

$25 – 30$  per hour

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Provide instruction and demonstration of basic stitching, use of basic patterns for bags, cushion covers and clothing items, means for mending damaged clothing and other alterations, basic machine use, and basic machine maintenance
    • Develop lesson plans and organises daily classes so that demonstration, instruction, and practice can be completed during the grant period
    • Regularly assess progress and adapt curriculum to best suit the needs and capabilities of the attendee body
    • Maintain a record of attendee attendance and provide reports to project manager
    • Evaluate each attendee performance, knowledge, and skills in the respective skills being taught; conduct regular assessments and prepare progress reports
    • Help identify and maintain sewing materials and equipment required and help with inventory records
    • Participate in curriculum and other learning and income/employment opportunities for participants
    • Participate in team meetings to help improve learning quality for attendees and to support them with various activities
    • Tailor explanations and teaching approaches to suit the understanding and comfort level of all learners.
    • Demonstrate empathy and patience in supporting learners through the challenges.
    • Provide constructive feedback on learner performance.
    • Adapt teaching strategies and materials to accommodate diverse learning styles and preferences.
    • Structure sessions to set achievable goals, manage time effectively, and track progress.
SKILLS AND REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
    • Professional experience in a training, educational, customer support or other position requiring regular interaction with people.
    • At least 10 years sewing experience and skills in 
    • repairs and alterations
    • zippers
    • working from a domestic pattern
    • making entire outfits
    • Flexibility in teaching approaches.
    • Previous mentoring or teaching roles.
    • Experience working with students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds is an advantage.
